Post-harvest
begins the quiet time in the vineyard. The bird
netting is removed from the vines and packed
away for another season. Wild turkeys, hares
and raccoons now freely roam the vineyard to
feast on the unharvested "second crop" fruit.
Bone meal or a similar nutritional supplement
is placed around the base of the vines where
fall and winter rains can dissolve the minerals
and enrich the soil. Dark green leaves fade to
yellow-brown and gradually fall off the canes,
and the bare vines settle down to four month's
rest.
